Accutane Side Effects

I told you about how much of a commitment is required to take Accutane. I’ll admit, that I don’t always feeling like going to the lab for my monthly pregnancy test, but I want this acne to go away!

I don’t know how much time my dermatologist spend with me talking about the importance of not getting pregnant while on this drug. But, after all the paperwork, pledging and what not, I finally had the chance to ask her about what I could expect while taking this stuff. All the talk about birth defects almost had me saying, “Never mind.” Because becoming a mother is not in my immediate plans, I decided to move ahead. But, I needed to know what I could expect.

Of course, there’s always the possibility that I could be allergic, or hypersensitive, to Accutane. I don’t know any medication that doesn’t carry that risk. She said serious side effects may include: seizures, joint pain, stomach issues, diarrhea, depression, and problems with hearing and vision. There’s always the risk that any of these serious effects may occur, but in general, they are not common side effects. More common are changes to the skin, like dryness, cracking and peeling. She said I may have some occasional dizziness. She said that above all, she said I should immediately report anything unusual to her. Believe me, she gets a call anytime I notice anything different. So far, nothing serious has happened. However, on a positive note, my nodular acne has improved.
