Accutane Review
My type of acne, nodular acne, does not respond well to normal medical treatment. I’ve done the antibiotics and other creams. They helped some, but I didn’t see the improvement I expected. As a last resort, my doctor prescribed Accutane.
Accutane is only for severe cases of nodular acne and requires a few additional steps before you can get the prescription filled. This drug has some serious effects on fetuses, so I had to take 2 pregnancy tests. I had to join the iPledge program. As part of this program, I had to promise that I would use 2 forms of birth control. I only get a 30 day supply of Accutane at a time; I have to have a negative pregnancy test each month before I can get it refilled. This is not your run of the mill drug store pregnancy test; I have to go to the lab each month to be tested. I have to do this whether or not I’ve been sexually active.
My doctor said that even 1 dose of Accutane can cause birth defects, so I am to not take the drug and should contact her immediately if I should EVER have unprotected sex while using this treatment. I had to promise that I would continue to use 2 forms of birth control for 30 days after I stop taking Accutane. This drug can cause serious harm to an unborn child. Using this drug to treat your acne is a commitment.
