How To Deal With Nodular Acne
I’ve been thinking about my experiences since developing nodular acne. The initial flare didn’t upset me, I just thought it was a normal acne outbreak. I treated just like I did when I was a teen. It eventually cleared up and I didn’t give it a second thought.
The second flare was a little worse than the first. However, I proceeded with the treatment I used before. I noticed there was pain with this outbreak. I had never experienced that before. I was a little concerned, but got over it as the pimples disappeared.
It was after the third outbreak that I decided to see a dermatologist. This episode was much more painful than the last. The pimples were much larger and the patches, for lack of a better word, were more widespread over my face. My immediate concern was scarring. My doctor started treatment with oral antibiotics and a skin care regimen which included prescription creams. It worked some, but I still had large patches of painful cysts on my face. My doctor and I discussed my options and decided to use stronger medications. My skin looks better, but there’s still room for improvement.
Thinking about my experience, I began to wonder how many other women go through the ups and downs of treating nodular acne. I know I get depressed from time to time. It’s hard to discuss this with friends who don’t have it. They can’t understand the embarrassment, pain and frustration. There are support groups for everything under the sun, so why not for nodular acne? I called my dermatologist today and she gave me the name and number of a lady that has started such a group in our area. The next meeting is soon and I plan on being there.
